The Masterplan sought to deliver significant infrastructure and public realm improvements within the regeneration area. Together with housing renewal, these enhancements are intended to simulate the transformation of Castlefields into a vibrant residential neighbourhood with a quality environment.
The majority of the original infrastructure and environmental projects identifed within the Masterplan are now complete. These projects have included:
- Extensive pedestrian and cycleway link improvements;
- Removal of an intrusive section of elevated Busway and its replacement with a shared use link road to serve the new local centre;
- Subway closures and enhancements, including a public art project - The Gateway Gallery
- A public realm enhancement lighting strategy;
- Improvements to signage and place markers;
- Creation of Phoenix Park, an 8 hectare youth activity park; and
- Town Park Lake enhancements.
Alongside the ongoing demolition and redevelopment of deck access blocks, public realm improvement continue to be made. These are guided by a portfolio of design and environmental guidance, specific to Castlefields, to ensure a consistent high quality approach to the public realm is maintained across the neighbourhood.
