A New Local Centre for Castlefields

Castlefields residents wanted to see the heart put back into the neighbourhood by redeveloping the existing rundown and neglected local centre with new shops and community facilities.

The partnership has worked hard to meet local community aspirations. The original masterplan was amended to reinstate the existing local centre location rather than relocate shops to a mixed use area alongside the Bridgewater Canal. In January 2009 the Partnership acquired the existing centre by using Compulsory Purchase Powers.

In spring 2009 the Primary Care Trust announced that they wanted to deliver a new state of the art community health centre (incorporating a retail chemist) as part of the revitalised local centre.  Find out more about the new local centre and what shops and facilities are planned.

The former Castlefields Local Centre is now demolished

On morning of Saturday 29th May 2010, residents woke up to find that the former local centre had disappeared!

Construction Period Information

During the construction period the existing community centre and health centre will remain open. The existing health centre will operate a dispensing chemist for prescriptions until services transfer to the new health centre.

The Newsagents, Post Office and Bookmakers have been relocated to temporary units within Shepherds Row. These shops will stay in Shepherds Row until the shops in the new Village Square are completed. Residents are encouraged to support their local shops and facilities at this time. The new Village Square development is due to be completed in 2011.

Wherever possible temporary closures of footpaths will be kept to a minimum with clearly signposted diversions. Busway closures and bus service diversions will also be kept to minimum with notification given well in advance.

It is anticipated that the new shops, Community Centre (including a satellite library and café) and homes are scheduled for completion in summer 2011, with the New Health Centre to open in early 2012.
